Aluminum foil generally refers to a rolled product with a thickness less than 0.2mm and a rectangular cross-section. However, the thickness boundaries in different countries are not exactly the same (Table 1-1), and there are more and more aluminum foils below the thickness limit.

Classification of aluminum foil by thickness

Aluminum foil can be divided into thick aluminum foil, single zero foil and double zero foil according to thickness difference.

• ① Thick aluminum foil: Aluminum foil with a thickness of 0.1~0.2mm.
• ② Single zero foil: foil with a thickness of 0.01mm and less than 0.1mm.
• ③ Double-zero foil: The so-called double-zero foil is a foil with two zeros after the decimal point when its thickness is measured in mm. It is usually an aluminum foil with a thickness less than 0. 0075mm.

When expressed in English, thick foil is called “heavy duty aluminum foil”, single zero foil is called “medium gauge foil”, and double zero foil is called “light gauge foil”.

In foreign countries, aluminum foil with a thickness of ≤40μm is sometimes called light gauge foil, while aluminum foil with a thickness of >40μm is collectively called heavy duty (gauge) foil.

Aluminum foil can be divided into roll aluminum foil and sheet aluminum foil according to its shape. Aluminum foil deep processing wool is mostly supplied in roll form, and sheet aluminum foil is only used in a few handicraft packaging situations.

Aluminum foil can be divided into hard foil, semi-hard foil and soft foil according to the temper.

• ① Hard foil: Aluminum foil that has not been softened (annealed) after rolling, and has residual oil on the surface without degreasing. Therefore, rigid foil must be degreased before printing, lamination, and coating. If it is used for forming processing, it can be used directly.
• ② Semi-hard foil: Aluminum foil whose hardness (or strength) is between hard foil and soft foil, usually used for forming processing.
• ③ Soft foil: fully annealed after rolling

The softened aluminum foil has a soft material and no residual oil on the surface. Currently, most application fields, such as packaging, composites, electrical materials, etc., use soft foils.

Aluminum foil can be divided into one-sided smooth aluminum foil and two-sided smooth aluminum foil according to the surface condition.

• ① Single-sided smooth aluminum foil: Double-rolled aluminum foil. After being rolled, one side is bright and one side is darkened. Such aluminum foil is called single-sided smooth aluminum foil. The thickness of single-sided aluminum foil usually does not exceed 0.025mm.
• ② Single-sided bright aluminum foil: A single rolled aluminum foil, with both sides in contact with the roller. The two sides of the aluminum foil are divided into mirror double-sided aluminum foil and ordinary double-sided aluminum foil due to the different surface roughness of the roller. The thickness of double-sided aluminum foil is generally not less than 0.01mm.

Aluminum foil can be divided into plain foil, embossed foil, composite foil, coated foil, colored aluminum foil and printed aluminum foil according to the processing state.

• ① Plain foil: Aluminum foil that has not undergone any other processing after rolling, also called light foil.
• ② Embossed foil: Aluminum foil with various patterns embossed on the surface.
• ③ Composite foil: Composite aluminum foil formed by laminating aluminum foil with paper, plastic film, and cardboard.
• ④ Coated foil: Aluminum foil coated with various resins or paints on the surface.
• ⑤ Color-coated aluminum foil: Aluminum foil coated with a single color on the surface.
• ⑥ Printed aluminum foil: Aluminum foil that forms various patterns, patterns, text or pictures on the surface by printing. It can be one color, up to 12 colors.

Aluminum foil can be classified by use

Ordinary aluminum foil: usually used in food packaging, preservation, cooking and other fields. This kind of aluminum foil is generally thin, soft and plastic.

Kitchen foil: Specifically designed for cooking and baking, it resists high temperatures and prevents food from sticking to the pan.

Medical Aluminum Foil: Used in the medical industry, for example to shield radiation during X-ray examinations.

Aluminum foil for electronics: It has high electrical and thermal conductivity and is used for packaging and shielding of electronic devices.

Insulating aluminum foil: With an insulating layer, used for the insulation of cables and wires.

Decorative aluminum foil: The surface can be coated, printed or treated and used in areas such as packaging, decoration and advertising.

Air conditioning foil: With special anti-corrosion and thermal conductivity properties, it is used for packaging of air conditioning ducts.

Pharmaceutical packaging foil: used for pharmaceutical packaging and usually needs to meet special standards for pharmaceutical packaging.

Automotive Aluminum Foil: Used in automotive parts such as automotive radiators.

Aluminum foil for construction: used for building insulation, waterproofing materials, etc.
